I feel like I had a damn epiphany this past weekend.
In my opinion, I feel like there are some in the photography community who have beaten into our heads that if we want specialize in a certain genre(s) of photography we should turn away any shoot that doesn’t fit into that genre no matter how much business you have coming in right now. Or maybe I’m the only idiot who bought into this BS, and now I’m realizing I’ve completely screwed myself lol HA! Yes, I think you can totally specialize and only shoot a certain genre(s) of photography WHEN YOU HAVE AN ESTABLISHED BUSINESS AND AN ESTABLISHED CLIENTELE BASE. Not when you move your business every two years and have to keep starting over.
I LOVE shooting events photo journalistically, tween and teen girls, and beauty/boudoir portraits of moms. This is what I tell people I specialize in. Please note, I have a potty mouth and HATE watching my mouth. This is the prime reason why I don’t shoot family/children sessions right now. WTF right?! I don’t want to offend anyone and create a negative reputation for myself.
When I shot the above family shoot, it made me realize that I could watch my mouth, and I can totally relate to kids, WHY AM I NOT SHOOTING THESE TYPES OF SESSIONS?! I’m a business person more than I am an “artist.” I need to be concentrating on the money v.s. my “art.” (I know I might get yelled at for that lol HA!) But it’s true. I’m a business. Businesses have to make money. I bought my very first camera with the mindset of “I am changing my career and dream of being a police officer to owning a photography business.” I can do fun shoots via casting calls for my creative outlet and to create my “art.”
So, my epiphany was, I need to be honest with potential clients. Yes, I do specialize in certain genres. I practice my ass off shooting those genre(s) of photography, and you will get the best photo shoot I can offer and amazing images if you book a shoot that falls into one of those genres. BUT I can totally rock a family sessions and give you a great variety of images for you to print some and put them on your damn wall.
Brain dump over. I feel better. HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Thanks for listening. ;)
